10 Simple Doorways to Awe and Wonder in Your Everyday Life

Hey there, Inspirer family!

Let’s be honest for a second. When was the last time you felt truly, genuinely, stop-you-in-your-tracks… awed?

I’m not talking about seeing the Grand Canyon or watching a rocket launch (though those are amazing!). I mean that little gasp of wonder, that quiet moment of magic that can pop up on a perfectly ordinary Tuesday.

Lately, I felt like my life was running on autopilot. Wake up, coffee, work, emails, scroll, cook, sleep, repeat. My world felt like it was shrinking, viewed through the four-inch screen in my hand. The colours seemed a little duller, the sounds a bit more muffled. I was efficient, but I wasn't enchanted.

It was during a particularly grey afternoon in Kumasi, watching the rain streak down my windowpane, that I realized I was waiting for wonder to find me. I was waiting for the big, flashy moments, while completely missing the quiet magic happening all around.

That had to change. Awe isn't a luxury vacation package; it's a mindset, a practice. And the beautiful thing is, you don’t have to go searching for it. You just have to open the doorways that are already there.

Here at Inspirersblog, we're all about that journey of personal growth. So, I want to share 10 simple, personal doorways I've discovered to let a little more awe and wonder back into my everyday life.

1. Look Up, Literally

This sounds almost too simple, doesn't it? But think about it: how much of our day is spent looking down at our phones, our keyboards, or our feet? I made a conscious effort for one week: every time I stepped outside, the first thing I did was look up.

What I found was breathtaking. I saw clouds that looked like floating continents, the impossible gradient of a sunset turning from fiery orange to soft lavender, and the resilience of a single, bright star appearing in the city sky. It’s a physical act that shifts your perspective. You go from the small bubble of your own worries to remembering you’re part of a vast, beautiful universe.

2. Find the Universe in the Small Details

Just as looking up connects us to the vast, looking down connects us to the intricate. I started calling this my "micro-safari." While waiting for a friend at a café, instead of scrolling, I looked at the detailed grain of the wooden table. I noticed the tiny, iridescent wings of a fly, a marvel of biological engineering.

I saw a tiny flower pushing its way through a crack in the pavement and felt a profound sense of awe for its persistence. Nature doesn’t just shout its beauty from the mountaintops; it whispers it in the veins of a leaf and the pattern of a snail’s shell.

3. Listen with Your Whole Body

We hear things all day, but we rarely listen. One morning, I sat on my porch and closed my eyes, determined not just to hear the world, but to experience its symphony.

First, I heard the obvious: the distant traffic, a dog barking. But then, as I settled in, I started hearing the layers. The rustle of leaves in the mango tree, the gentle hum of the refrigerator from inside the house, the chirping of different birds creating a complex harmony. It was a rich, textured soundscape I had been completely deaf to. Awe isn't just visual; it's a full-sensory experience.

4. Re-enchant Your Taste Buds

I used to eat lunch at my desk, barely tasting the food as I answered emails. It was just fuel. I decided to reclaim one meal a day as a moment of wonder. I would sit without any screens and focus solely on the food.

I tasted the sweetness of a tomato and thought about the sun and soil that created it. I felt the satisfying crunch of a fresh piece of bread and appreciated the ancient human process of baking. Food went from being fuel to being a connection—to the earth, to history, and to the hands that prepared it. It became a small, daily ritual of gratitude and awe.

5. Become a "Wonder Detective"

Curiosity is the engine of wonder. Instead of accepting the world at face value, start asking "why?" and "how?" The other day, a gentle breeze blew through my window. Instead of just enjoying it, I pulled out my phone and asked, "How is wind created?"

I fell down a rabbit hole of atmospheric pressure, the Coriolis effect, and global weather patterns. For a few minutes, I was in awe of the invisible forces shaping my world. You can do this with anything: How does Wi-Fi work? Why do leaves change colour? Every mundane thing is a doorway to a universe of incredible complexity and genius.

As researcher Dacher Keltner, one of the world's leading experts on awe, says, “Awe is the feeling of being in the presence of something vast that transcends your understanding of the world.” Becoming a wonder detective is about actively seeking out those moments of transcendence.

6. Be a Tourist in Your Own Neighbourhood

We often think we need to travel to distant lands to see something new. But I guarantee there is wonder hiding in plain sight right where you live. I challenged myself to walk down a street in my neighbourhood I’d never explored.

I discovered a beautiful old house with incredible architecture, a hidden community garden bursting with colour, and a piece of street art that made me smile. I saw my familiar home through fresh eyes. It reminded me that adventure isn't about location; it's about attention.

7. See the Awe in Other People

Sometimes the most profound wonder is found not in nature or science, but in another human being. We get so used to our friends, family, and colleagues that we forget they are entire universes of experiences, stories, and dreams.

Next time you’re talking to someone, try asking a deeper question. Instead of "How was your day?" try "What was one thing that surprised you today?" or "Tell me about a time you felt truly alive." I did this with my own grandmother, and she told me a story about her childhood I had never heard before. In that moment, she wasn't just my grandma; she was a young girl with hopes and fears, and I was in awe of the life she had lived.

8. Revisit a Childhood Favourite

Remember that book, movie, or song that filled you with wonder as a child? For me, it was reading The Hobbit. As an adult, I decided to read it again.

Of course, I saw it differently now, but a flicker of that old magic was still there. It reconnected me to a younger version of myself who found the world inherently magical, before cynicism and responsibility set in. It was a beautiful reminder that that sense of wonder never truly leaves us; it just gets buried. Sometimes, you just need the right key to unlock it.

9. Appreciate Human Ingenuity

Awe doesn't only live in the natural world. It lives in the things we create. For a long time, I took the bridge I drive over every day for granted. One day, I parked and just looked at it. I thought about the minds that conceived it, the physics that held it up, and the thousands of hands that built it. It was a testament to human collaboration and intelligence, suspended over the water.

Look around you. The chair you're sitting in, the device you're reading this on, the simple coffee mug on your desk. These are all small miracles of design and function. Acknowledging this can fill an ordinary room with a sense of wonder at what we're capable of.

10. Practice Gratitude for the "Impossible" Mundane

This might be the most powerful doorway of all. We live surrounded by things that would have been considered pure magic just a few centuries ago. Clean, hot water appearing at the turn of a knob. Light flooding a room with the flick of a switch. The ability to talk to someone miles away instantly.

I started a small practice: every time I washed my hands, I took a second to feel a sense of awe for the clean, running water. It sounds silly, but it radically changed my perspective. It transformed a chore into a moment of gratitude.

As Albert Einstein beautifully put it, “The most beautiful thing we can experience is the mysterious. It is the source of all true art and science.” By seeing the mystery and magic in our everyday conveniences, we tap into a constant source of awe.
